Leading for Justice and Equity in Schools of Education

Edited by Kathy Schultz

This series is designed for current and former deans and leaders in schools of education (associate deans, department heads, and others in leadership positions) to describe and analyze their work to develop a focus on justice and equity in their schools. Potential authors and editors can propose projects on a range of topics related to this theme. They might write about decisions around hiring and admissions, as well as the difficult conversations they and the faculty, staff, and students may have engaged in to build schools of education that are welcoming, diverse, justice oriented, critical, and committed to equity. These books might focus on particular programs, such as teacher education programs, or they might look across schools and even universities. The books in this series will reflect a wide range of genres and methodologies, including case studies and more empirical work including ethnographic studies, action or participatory research, narrative formats such as memoirs, portraiture, theoretical analyses, and work that is more experimental, e.g., multimodal texts. Volumes in the series will be a mix of single author works, collaborations and edited collections. Subject matter might include: • What does it mean to lead collectively at a time when there is so much division and controversy in the world and on our campuses? • How do leaders address contested ideas such as democracy and justice in their daily work and in their work to create a coherent vision for their schools? • How do schools of education both support and also perpetuate justice and injustice? • How do leaders address these complexities and contradictions? • What are the lessons learned by leaders and schools? Books will include practical applications or guidance for leaders, addressing both the external or public impact of their work as well as the internal dynamics.
