Health Worker Roles in Providing Safe Abortion Care and Post-Abortion Contraception

This publication provides guidance and recommendations for the roles of non-physician providers (midwives, nurses, auxiliary nurses, community workers, pharmacists) in the provision of safe abortion and post abortion care.

Over the last several years there have been numerous studies that have looked at the safety, efficacy and feasibility of such cadres of providers and this book ensures that this new evidence is systematically reviewed and evidence based recommendations developed.

Both surgical abortion (MVA and D&E) as well as medical abortion and the role of such health workers in supportive tasks (counselling, referrals, community education, post abortion contraception provision etc.) are covered.
